Our Story

We are a locally & seasonally focused restaurant serving elevated California-style cuisine and celebrating close relationships with farmers, ranchers & fishermen.

We’re located in a beautiful valley surrounded by rolling hills, oak trees and vineyards in a renovated 1800’s brick building.

Our Team

Bill Niles, Executive Chef/Owner

Bill got his start training in commercial kitchens in the Greater Philadelphia area when he was a teenager and hasn't stopped. He moved out West in 2008 and worked as Chef De Cuisine for some of the most notable restaurants in the Bay Area including KronnerBurger and Bar Tartine. Bill also took the helm as Executive Chef at St Vincent - a wine haven from celebrated author, James Beard Award winner and Wine Director/GM of Babbo Ristorante, David Lynch. Together they earned a 3 star review at the San Francisco Chronicle and Bill received a rising star chef award from Eater National. In 2016 Bill returned to the Tartine family to open the high profile Tartine Manufactory. Bill’s work as Executive Chef helped to earn them consideration as finalists for a James Beard award in 2017 as well as Best New Restaurant in Food and Wine magazine. At Range Life, Bill brings a commitment to scrupulous sourcing and making approachable food with extraordinary and sometimes unfamiliar ingredients.


Sarah Elliott Niles, General Manager/Wine Director/Owner

Sarah has been in the restaurant industry for over twenty years, spending several in San Francisco’s most esteemed establishments including Bar Tartine (where she met her future husband Bill), the bistro extension of the celebrated Tartine Bakery, and Commonwealth, one of 2010’s most celebrated restaurant openings in San Francisco. Sarah’s wine list at Commonwealth received praise from the San Francisco Chronicle’s restaurant critic, Michael Bauer, as well as its wine editor and best selling author, Jon Bonné. In 2012, Sarah joined Bill and the rest of the opening team at St. Vincent. Prior to opening Range Life, Sarah spent over 3 years as part of the management team driving one of San Francisco’s most popular restaurants, Outerlands, as well as overseeing its wine program. She curates a wine list that caters to every type of wine drinker, novices and connoisseurs alike. Sarah, Bill, and their daughter James are so proud to call Livermore’s wine country home.


Alex Phillips, Bar Manager

Using the same approach the kitchen does to our simple but refined food, Alex utilizes the Bay Area’s abundant produce to create a cocktail menu that reflects the season. Alex has brought his talents to Range Life after many years bartending and heading programs at some of the Bay Area’s most standout restaurants, such as Delfina, Camino, Al’s Place & Sister.
